Les Houches

The Chamonix area is truly spectacular. It was difficult to look at Mont Blanc without stopping to take yet another photograph – a yearning to take some of the beauty home with me. In summer it is a world of colour: clear blue skies, white capped mountains, craggy peaks, the foreboding grey of the glaciers, the sails of the hang gliders descending from Aiguille du Midi and Brévent, and the beautiful meadow flowers. It is hard to imagine this world under the cloak of winter wrapped in blanket of snow and ice.

Lübeck

Lübeck - outstanding gothic brick city in the north. A city gate for the 50 DM note - a quiet corner - carrot soup - I get some lollies - wonderful Willy Brandt - god and the devil negotiate on building works.

Morlaix

Morlaix, a city built in a valley. Bonne pour la santé. Imposing 1850s viaduct. Solemn reminder of dark days. A reassigned boat harbour and as I found out a great place for breakfast.

Essen

In my last post from my recent trip to Germany I describe my visit to Zeche Zolverein, "die schönste Zeche der Welt“.  This UNESCO World Heritage listed site is home to the wonderful Ruhr Museum.

Kassel

Took the train to the (initially) charmless city of Kassel in northern Hesse. But scratch the surface and there is so much to see and appreciate. This is a place to which I must return!

Schloss Nymphenburg

It was a perfect sunny day in Munich so I took the U-Bahn and tram to Schloss Nymphenburg, the former country or summer retreat of the Electors of Bavaria.  The palace takes its name from the many portraits of beautiful young women that adorn its walls.

Romberg Park

Just 15 minutes walk from where I am staying in Dortmund is the beautiful Romberg Park.  It is an “English style” botanic garden that is also home to the aforementioned Dortmund Zoo.
