Grüner Salon - Dortmund

Nordmarkt, a quiet square situated in the cosmopolitan Inner Nordstadt district of Dortmund. On the east side of the park lies  Grüner Salon, now under the new management of Milena and Jasna Rethmann.  I know Milena and Jasna from my previous visit to Dortmund and when I got in touch to arrange to meet up for a coffee, the last thing I expected was that I would be inviting them to their own cafe!

Grüner Salon provides simple daily formula meals for busy city workers until 2.00pm, before transforming itself into a quiet cafe during the afternoon and a bar into the long hours of the night.  The proprietors take great pride in serving traditional German filter coffee, as well as a range of local beers on tap, imported bottle beers, spirits and aperitifs.

Avocado-Tomatensalate

I arrived in the afternoon and chose the Avocado-Tomate Salate.  It was simply prepared with a delicate balance of fresh ingredients and balsamic vinegar dressing.  And the coffee? Good strongly brewed northern European style filter kaffee. Just like I remember from the 80s before the march of the espresso machines.  Vive la diversité!

Grüner Salon is a welcome addition to the Nordstadt precinct.  Melina and Jasna have a taken a big step in opening their first establishment.  But already it reflects their passion for good service and their affinity with their local area.  It is a quiet haven that is highly recommended for locals and visitors to Dortmund.
